Due to its situation on the north-western side of Russia and therefore close to the Baltic Sea, the weather in St. Petersburg is known for being changeable, with climate extremes and distinct seasonal changes. The beginning of summer is a popular time to visit St. Petersburg, along with early autumn, when the golden fall colours at the start of October are quite a sight to behold.

June, July and August predictably experience the warmest and most humid climate in St. Petersburg, when temperatures often stay around 23°C / 73°F during the daytime, and at times rise even a little higher. The warmest month is usually July, when even night-time temperatures average a pleasant 13°C / 55°F. St. Petersburg is famous for its long summer daylight hours and in the heart of summer, the sun hardly sets at all and this period has become known as the 'White Nights'.
August tends to feature the wettest weather in St. Petersburg, although precipitation levels are still fairly low and far from being excessive. The August rainfall is around 76 mm / 3 inches, as opposed to the driest month of February, when it is just 25 mm / 1 inch.
The winter climate in St. Petersburg is chilly and night-time frosts can be hard, regularly dropping to below -10°C / 14°F in February. Although the winter weather can be cold, you can expect a number of warmer spells at times, in between the snow flurries and frosty weather. Between December and March there are usually more than 100 days featuring a snow cover of some description. Even the River Neva freezes over during the winter, finally breaking up in April, when the climate begins to improve and temperatures quickly rise.
