St. Petersburg Shopping and Districts

(St. Petersburg, North-Western Federal District, Russia)

Photo of central shopsThe shopping in St. Petersburg has never been better and you can usually find almost everything that you could possible need simply along the Nevsky Prospekt. There are also countless kiosks, which line the underground stretch between the Nevsky Prospekt and the Sadovaya Ulitsa, where cheap CDs and DVDs are sold.

Many traditional Russian handicrafts can be purchased all over the city, such as the famous stacking Russian dolls (matryoshka), and either credit cards or Russian rubles are accepted - strictly no other currencies. However, if you are looking for more Western-style shopping in St. Petersburg, then a number of good shopping malls are found around the Sennaya Ploshchad and also the Vladimirsky Prospekt.

Where to Shop

The Nevsky Prospekt is the main shopping thoroughfare in St. Petersburg and this busy street is truly the heart of the action and home to department stores, such as the Bolshoi Gostiny Dvor and the Passage Trading House. A number of supermarkets line the adjacent streets, including a good food store close to the prominent statue of Catherine the Great.

Shopping is available around the adjoining Sadovaya Ulitsa, and further afield on Vasilyevsky Island, along the Bolshoi Prospekt, where a good choice of different stores await. To the south of central St. Petersburg and beyond the Fontanka, the area known as Vladimirskaia contains a series of notable shopping streets, together with a number of leading cultural attractions.

Slightly north and in close proximity to St. Petersburg's Chernyshevskaia metro station, the area around Liteinyi Prospekt is a good place to max out your credit card. If you are still not shopped out and want more, check out the shopping specifically around the Bolshaya Konyushennaya Ulitsa, Leninsky Prospekt, Moskovsky Prospekt and Prospekt Engelsa, which is also good.
